Ostuni

Known as 'The White City', Ostuni is rightfully among the most beautiful villages in our country! Its small white houses, its narrow alleys that chase each other, giving life to corners that offer breathtaking views of the Adriatic... here in Ostuni everything recalls and attracts beauty and candour. There are those who have never been here and those who love to return again and again to this Apulian town... what is certain is that this city continues to amaze and always requires new and curious eyes that allow you to grasp every little detail!

Ostuni between heaven and earth: an earthly paradise nestled between olive groves and dry stone walls

Just a few kilometres from the Torre Guaceto Natural Reserve, an area rich in flora and fauna protected by the WWF, and from Costa Merlata and Torre Pozzella, respectively two of Ostuni's most important marinas, lies this small enchanted village: it is impossible not to recognise it! Its whitewashed houses stand out from afar, distinguishing the small Apulian town of Ostuni as the 'white town' of Salento. It has always been one of the favourite destinations chosen by tourists from all over the world who love to lose themselves in the streets of the historic centre or to sip a delicious coffee in complete tranquillity in Piazza della Libertà, one of the town's main squares, full of bars, restaurants and clubs from which to start their discovery of one of Apulia's most fascinating towns. Dominating the square is an obelisk topped by a statue of St. Oronzo, the town's patron saint.

Ostuni is an ancient town and in fact is still surrounded by medieval defensive walls, modified over the centuries. Only three remain and it is possible to observe them from the beginning of Porta Nuova to Palazzo Scalona. The old town centre is the beating heart of the city: it will be wonderful to get lost among the narrow streets, balconies and arches built thanks to the skilful art of sculpting the local stone, especially Lecce stone, resulting in unique works.

Ostuni: an Apulian town rich in art

In the highest part of the city, it is impossible not to notice the majesty of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, one of the city's most important monuments, built in Gothic style and with one of the largest rose windows in existence. Opposite the Cathedral stands the Scoppa Arch, which seems to have been inspired by the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, and which gives way to the Diocesan Museum, a short distance away. This museum is of great importance to the city as it houses a remarkable historical and artistic heritage, including an archaeological collection and several valuable works of art.

Another important museum, a sign of the culture and art that characterise the town of Ostuni, is the 'Museo Civico delle Civiltà preclassiche della Murgia Meridionale' (Museum of Pre-Classical Civilisations of the Southern Murgia), which houses grave goods from the Messapian period and precious artefacts from the Renaissance and modern periods. The museum also contains an artefact of immense value: inside it is a reconstruction of the place where the skeleton of the so-called 'Woman of Ostuni or Delia', a woman with a foetus from the Palaeolithic era, was found. This find is extremely valuable as it is one of the oldest pregnant women ever found in the world.

Ostuni is full of wonders to be discovered: from art, to places of worship, to Apulian gastronomy to the unspoilt nature that surrounds it, this town is an ideal place to spend a weekend of peace and relaxation or an unforgettable summer holiday for all those families or groups of friends who love to have nothing to miss! Staying in Ostuni will transport anyone to a place where time seems to stand still and where only the calm, the warm sun and the sea breeze will punctuate the rest of their days!
